Senate Passes Nurse Visa Amendment
Good news on the immigration front.
As nursing shortages continue to increase nationwide, the US Senate is helping to address the problem by allowing more Chinese, Filipino and Indian registered nurses to work in the US.
Senator Bailey Hutchinson, Republican from Texas, Charles Schumer, Democrat from New York, and Ted Kennedy, Democrat from Massachusetts, gave strong arguments in support of an amendment to a Department of Defense (DoD) supplemental appropriations bill. Fifty percent of the unused employment-based visas were reassigned from the DoD appropriation to the Philippines, India and China, which exceeded their visa quotas. This could allow for the entry of additional, highly qualified nurses from these countries.
The bill still needs to be brought to the House of Representatives.
